Dalmatic Style Priest Vestment “Chrism with the icon of the Resurrection of Christ”

145000

The traditional depiction of the resurrection (the Anastasis, in Greek) evolved in the first centuries AD and was fully established by the sixth century. Up until the 11th century, the icons of the resurrection showed Christ holding the cross, a scroll, or the Gospel. There was no tradition of depicting a banner in the Saviour’s hands as a symbol of His victory over death and Hades. Compositionally, the images resembled depictions of Christ’s descent into Hades to liberate the souls of the righteous and sinners.

Description

The traditional depiction of the resurrection (the Anastasis, in Greek) evolved in the first centuries AD and was fully established by the sixth century. Up until the 11th century, the icons of the resurrection showed Christ holding the cross, a scroll, or the Gospel. There was no tradition of depicting a banner in the Saviour’s hands as a symbol of His victory over death and Hades. Compositionally, the images resembled depictions of Christ’s descent into Hades to liberate the souls of the righteous and sinners.
In the Icon we have embroidered, Jesus Christ stands victoriously in the centre. Robed in Heavenly white, He is surrounded by a mandorla of star-studded light, representing the Glory of God and two angels positioned at his feet.
The Orthodox Icon of the Resurrection is not content with simply showing us the Risen Christ, or the empty tomb; the Victory shown in the Icon of the Resurrection is complete.

Christ is risen from the dead,
Trampling down death by death,
And upon those in the tombs bestowing life!
-Paschal (Easter) Hymn
